Original Graphite portrait. Red Cloud was the first and only Western Indian chief to have won a protracted war with the United States. He led a two year campaign for the Powder River, during which he orchestrated the Sioux triumph known as the Fetterman Massacre. Ultimately, the U.S. abandoned Forts Reno, Phil Kearny and C.F. Smith, which were then burned to the ground. Later, on trips to Washington, D.C. and New York, Red Cloud recognized the vastness of the U.S. and its resources, and was among the first to negotiate peace with the U.S. and report to one of the reservations, which became known as the Red Cloud Agency.
