Red Cloud was an Oglala Lakota chief and military strategist who from 1865 to 1868 led his people to victory in Red Cloud’s War, forcing the U.S. to abandon forts on the Bozeman Trail under the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. Known as the most photographed Native American of the 19th century, he later pursued diplomacy, opposed the Dawes Act, and defended Lakota land rights until his death in 1909 at Pine Ridge Reservation.
