In the late 1800’s, the Indian Pony of the Nez Perce became known as “A Palouse” horse, named for the Palouse River that ran through the area around Oregon and Washington, home to the Nez Perce. The Nez Perce were known as expert horsemen, and through their practice of selective breeding, the Appaloosa developed into hardy, athletic equines. The coloring of these spotted mounts is such that no two Appaloosas are alike, in color or conformation.
